Male infertility on the increase – helpful practical advice

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Declining levels of male fertility “is as important as global warning” says Professor Niels Skakkebaek, of the University of Copenhagen.

Stop drinking so much alchohol, doing intensive cycle training as well as wearing  tight clothing, and having hot showers or saunas if you want to be a father is the practical advice given in a new guide published this week.

The guide by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority states that up to one in five healthy young men between the ages of 18 and 25 have abnormally low sperm counts.  In addition the sperm produced is of low quality.

We always see couples together at the clinic for fertility issues, and place a high importance on both the physical and emotional aspects of infertility.

An individual diagnosis which identifies the areas of imbalance in the body gets at the deep issues which are solved with acupuncture and herbal remedies.

We always give a wide range of practical advice with diet exercise and a whole of life approach.

World Health Organisation and Tamiflu

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

The World Health organisation is telling people who are normally healthy to not take Tamiflu if they think they may have Swine Flu.

This is a refreshing approach to the virus hitting drug, and a contrast to the medication-friendly recommendations made by the British NHS.  Of course The World Health Organisation has world-wide responsibilities for health and there will be parts of the world where medication such as Tamiflu is simply not available or too expensive.  And the NHS deserves credit for responding to fears about swine flu and providing Tamiflu on such a large scale.

However the WHO recommendation is a useful reminder.   If you are a normally healthy person your approach should be to let your body naturally fight infection.  It is what bodies are designed to do!

Rather than panicking about Swine Flu, a healthy adult can expect viral infections, and expect to get through them.  Of course you need to look after yourself, and definitely take it easy in both body and mind, but there is no need to rush to the pharmaceutical giants for your health.

The WHO states that if Tamiflu is taken on a world-wide scale the Swine Flu virus is likely to become stronger and more resistant to the medication.  So drugs that are ideal for vulnerable people become ineffective.

The best way to fight any infection at all is to ensure that your general health and well-being is good.  This involves diet, exercise and your mind as well as your body.

Modern living can be stressful, and a general boost through acupuncture and herbs to correct any imbalances enables you to fight viruses wherever they come from.  A long-lasting solution rather than a quick hit with Tamiflu.

Sarah Jessica Parker expecting surrogate twins

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Sarah Jessica Parker of “Sex and the City” fame and her husband Matthew Broderick are expecting girl twins in the summer by a surrogate mother.  If this sounds unlikely read it at Reuters.

At Healthwise of course we wonder if they tried acupuncture and herbal medicine. Surrogate parenthood is a huge step. In the clinic we do see quite a number of couples who expected the second baby to appear almost on cue.

Their chances of having the next baby naturally are increased with the acupuncture treatment package, but also their general level of health and well-being. So you can cope better with the pregnancy and with the babies when they appear.

Not all acupuncture is created equal and we are proud of our considerate and personal approach. If you know any celebrities who could easily consider surrogacy but would prefer to get pregnant naturally please refer them to Healthwise. We would love to help!

Winter the time to hibernate and relax

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

How many people do you know who were ill over Christmas?  A lot of my friends and acquaintances have been laid low in the run up to Christmas and afterwards.

According to the lunar calendar used in Chinese medicine this is not surprising as we should all be taking it easy in the winter months. Winter is traditionally the time for accumulation (not depletion of energy), nourishment and growth.

Flowers do not bloom in winter, trees lose their leaves .. plants have a period of downtime – and so should we!  Instead of getting stressed, winter is the time we should be relaxing more, eating good healthy food, and getting the rest we need.

So make the most of the credit crunch and avoid the sales and you will helping your health as well as your wallet!

Jennifer Aniston is turning to acupuncture to help with fertility

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Jennifer Aniston (Rachel in “Friends” ) is apparently looking at acupuncture
to help her become pregnant. I am so pleased because it means that other
women could be encouraged to try it, too.

When a couple realise that they want a baby but don’t seem to be able to
conceive it can be very worrying. I want couples to know that they have
other choices other than IVF to explore. What is perfect about acupuncture
is that it doesn’t do anything artificial … we simply restore balance and
help the body back to its natural fertile state.

Of course acupuncture is not a one minute wonder. Especially if there has
been illness it can take time to find the right energy balance … and we
expect the couples to look after themselves by avoiding harmful toxins as
much as possible.

At Healthwise we have recently been looking at our success rate and
realising that 64.7% of the couples who have come to us have gone on to have
a healthy baby. The joy when they do become pregnant is wonderful and we
share in their happiness.

People like Jennifer who have had a successful career and want to become
pregnant gain enormously from acupuncture and a holistic view of health.
Acupuncture does more than just help someone have a baby. We help them
regain health so they can enjoy their pregnancy and motherhood as well.
