Dandelion leaves – fresh and green

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Dandelions are a wonderful source of nutrition.  Pick the leaves while they are still small and you will be doing wonders for your blood and even your mood.

Young dandelion leaves are full of nutrition

Young dandelion leaves are full of nutrition

The dandelion leaves should not have been contaminated with any harmful substance like fumes or weedkiller, and it is probably a good idea to wash the leaves anyway.

Dandelions can be munched on, raw, added to salads and made into delicious and nutritious soups.  They are particularly helpful in purifying and strengthening the blood.

Dandelions also help to calm feelings of irritation and anger which, you may remember, are emotions associated with the spring.  I have often noticed that gardeners who get angry about dandelions appearing in the lawn are the ones who would benefit from eating the leaves.  If they could just stop and eat it would do them far more good!

Warm weather in Spring – stay wrapped up

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

We have had such beautiful  weather in the last week that blossom and leaves have appeared.

In the parks at the weekend I saw people wearing shorts and light tee shirts.

It does seem a tempting idea but – I am going to sound like your granny here – it is best to stay warm until summer is properly here.

A run of warm weather in spring is not the same as summer.  The spring winds are still cold and you can catch a chill quite easily. in fact very easily.  A lot of health problems are as a result of failing to behave according to the season.  Wear a light coat, and put the sandals back in the cupboard!

Lemon and ginger tea

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

If you have never tried lemon and ginger tea now’s your chance!

We will be giving all the visitors to our talk on 24th March a lovely cup of this gorgeous tea.

The sharpness of the lemon and the spicy ginger combine to give you all round goodness. Yes, this is a great drink for Spring as it helps your metabolism detox and boosts increasing energy as spring turns to summer.

You can get this in a sachet of pre-made tea but we prefer the real thing. Slices of real lemon and real ginger into boiling water. Let it cool a little and then sip.

Healthy diet in Spring

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

The sun is out at last! Spring has arrived and the leaves are starting to turn green.

Our bodies are regaining energy after the winter but they still need to be gently supported in the Spring. So don’t immediately turn to cold food even thought the sun is out.

Soups can be made easily and quickly and are the perfect spring time meal. Lighter than the rich winter casseroles, soups help your body to make the most of the natural detox going on at the moment. They are a great way to get lots of nutritious goodness. And for an extra twist to really help your body add a little spice. It will boost your energy.

To find out

  • what to eat in spring
  • how to detox naturally
  • how to boost your energy
  • come to Andrew Loosely’s talk at Healthwise

We look forward to seeing you!

Weight and Diet the natural health way

    Monday, March 2nd, 2009

We are getting a good response to Andrew Loosely’s talk on 24th March. It seems everyone is interested in losing weight and learning about the natural health approach to diet. Of course it is a great deal more pleasant to work with your body, rather than punish yourself.

People are very surprised to hear that it is easier to lose the additional toxins and the weght in the spring. Usually weight loss is a number one New Year resolution and – just as common – the weight is difficult to shift. The natural health way means that you are in tune with the season.

Spring diet – talk by Andrew Loosely

    Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Andrew Loosely will be giving a talk on Nature’s Diet – a healthy way to eat on Tuesday 24 March at Healthwise Clinic.

Surprisingly, we should all be having some bitterness in our diet at the moment, because it helps the natural detox. “Spring is the time when our bodies naturally detox so it is the perfect time to lose weight” says Andrew.

Coughs, colds, skin problems and cholesterol can be worse in the Spring, and you can discover what to eat to solve these health problems. Find out more

And of course it is better for your body than an extreme procedure or starvation diet. Come along and share the lemons!

Lose weight – how far will you go

    Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I have only just finished reading the “Sunday Times” (it can take ages!), and  was very interested in an article by India Knight about losing weight. She describes an Austrian clinic where you have enemas and a virtual starvation diet.

It is written wittily (she is a great writer) but from the natural health point of view .. far too extreme for the body.   Our bodies are not things to be bullied and starved, they are to be respected.  We live with them in a deep sense, not against them

And, best of all, your body is naturally detoxing and losing weight in the Spring.  It is much easier to work with what is happening naturally in your body at the right time of year.
Read India Knight’s article to see how far she is willing to go

How Can I Stay Healthy Into My 90s?

    Monday, February 16th, 2009

A great attitude will certainly help you to get there! We certainly believe there is nothing preventing you.

There are lots of things you can do. General advice includes things you’ll know already like taking some gentle exercise every day, drinking water, eating healthily, and avoiding excesses of tea, sugar, coffee and alcohol.

However, the diet that is right for you wouldn’t necessarily be right for somebody else. The exercise that is right for you may also not be helpful for somebody else. Without knowing your personal situation, my best advice after the general points above is to follow the Seasons.

The Seasons are very important in Chinese medicine. Each season brings different health problems which can best be solved within that season. I will be talking about this over the next few weeks in my column at 50 c0nnect and will also post it here so you can look at your health from this perspective.

You may have some particular problem that can be solved, but more general advice would be to stay balanced. Have time for reflection and time for action, be physically active and also relax completely, take some time out and just be still!

Natural medicine is based on the energy that goes round your body, and ideally you want it to flow freely and not get stuck. Getting stuck in any emotion like anger or fear, for example, is connected to your physical well-being and is also connected to this time of year.

There is a particular emotion connected to Spring, and you will hear about that very soon.

Keep in touch and in the meantime have some me time…….
