Acupuncture is recommended for the NHS as treatment for back pain

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Acupuncture has been recommended as treatment for back pain on the National Health Service in the UK.

It is the first time the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has explicitly backed the use of any complementary therapies.

So this is very important news indicating credibility for acupuncture.

Acupuncture is already at the top of the complementary therapies but has never been recognised by NICE.

Back pain costs the country billions in terms of lost days, and with an aging population  slumped in front of a computer or the TV screen, it can only be expected to get worse.  So to some extent this may be a cheaper alternative to expensive pills, days in hospita, and certainly days lost to productive work.

This is however a very significant move forward.  Maybe pills and potions are beginning lose their authority – even to the medical establishment – and perhaps the side effects are also being factored in to the treatment.

Women who want to want to turn infertility around naturally prefer to consider acupuncture before IVF and IUI, but we are not aware that the general public would think of acupuncture for back pain.  It will be interesting to see what effect this recommendation has. The cases of back pain treated by Andrew Loosely at Healthwise Clinic have to date been as a result of people who know and trust the clinic already: they have sometimes been surprised that acupuncture can relieve back pain.

The World Health Authority has been recommending acupuncture for back pain for many years.  But they have a a higher regard for traditional medicine as it is so effective in many countries of the world where western medicines are expensive or inappropriate.  In “developed” countries pill-popping to mask symptoms has been the orthodox view.

This is an exciting development.  However a word of caution .. not all acupuncturists are created equal .. so it is important to find a practitioner who has qualified thoroughly in acupuncture, rather than simply had an additional module as part of another type of training.

NICE is recommending three different types of treatment… including physical exercise according to the BBC.

Acupuncture can be very effective not only with the pain, but in terms of strengthening the body to prevent ill-health. Of course prevention is better than cure, and a gentle exercise programme, the right diet and an enlightened attitude in harmony with the environment is the best defence. Back pain is not just back pain but part of lifestyle choices and even attitude.

Baby boom

Monday, May 25th, 2009

There is a baby boom taking place at the moment!

Back in September and October when the recession news really started to hit it was noted that sales of take-aways were going up. So people were staying in more, and the papers at the time said that this might result in more births.

And they were right. Now, nine months later a lot of babies are being born. Apparently in some hospitals there is a problem with finding midwives to assist with the births.

If you would love to be part of the giving birth boom but are having problems, please don’t worry. There are a lot of things you can do to help yourself become pregnant. The first one is to enjoy yourself and cut down stress.

If you consider acupuncture and chinese herbs with Healthwise, we can advise you on what would be best in your individual situation.

Our clients enjoy coming to the clinic for their treatment which is a wonderful start.

Spring health changing to summer health

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

We are heading towards summer which has an impact on your health and well being.

Health issues for summer are different from the health issues in spring. There are different health problems and health opportunities which become relevant – and therefore – can be treated most effectively during that season.

This is relevant for identifed problems but also for a your attitude.

The aim of natural health is that your body is healthy, and you have a sense of wellbeing.

We can re-balance your energy with acupuncture and herbal medicine to make the changes, but you are the keeper of the key to health.

As we move into summer (as defined by the lunar calendar sytem) Andrew Loosely will be providing tips and hints on what to do for your health during this season.

Too old for fertility at 66?

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Opinions are getting heated on this subject.

Lots of the people we speak to think she is too old, and that it is wrong to conceive at an age when you could not have a baby naturally.

Other people think it is all right, and that life is uncertain enough anyway so whether she will be a competent mother of a teenager at 80 is not really the issue.

As you might expect the medical establishment are divided on this as well.

What do you think? We would appreciate your thoughts!

Britain’s oldest mother at 66

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

According to the Daily Mail Elizabeth Adeney will give birth at 66. She went to a fertility clinic abroad for the IVF treatment.

She will be just under 80 when her child becomes a teenager.

The NHS places a limit of 40 for treatment and most British private clinics at around 50 – 55. Not so in Ukraine, and obviously not where Elizabeth Adeney went. Fertility clinics in some countries pay well for egg donation, and older mothers are happy to pay to be pregnant.

Apart from the debates about the rights and wrongs it does highlight the artificiality of the treatment. A woman of 66 would not normally be able to become pregnant, but science can do it for her, using her body as a waiting room. She is likely to elect to have a baby by caesarean, as well.

Certainly no natural health.

Sarah Jessica Parker expecting surrogate twins

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Sarah Jessica Parker of “Sex and the City” fame and her husband Matthew Broderick are expecting girl twins in the summer by a surrogate mother.  If this sounds unlikely read it at Reuters.

At Healthwise of course we wonder if they tried acupuncture and herbal medicine. Surrogate parenthood is a huge step. In the clinic we do see quite a number of couples who expected the second baby to appear almost on cue.

Their chances of having the next baby naturally are increased with the acupuncture treatment package, but also their general level of health and well-being. So you can cope better with the pregnancy and with the babies when they appear.

Not all acupuncture is created equal and we are proud of our considerate and personal approach. If you know any celebrities who could easily consider surrogacy but would prefer to get pregnant naturally please refer them to Healthwise. We would love to help!

Taking charge of your fertility

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Fertility is an issue that affects mind, body and spirit.

Couples who come to Healthwise Clinic for acupuncture to help conception, have often had their condition described as infertility, or unexplained infertility.

Our approach is to think in terms of the positive condition rather than describing it in a negative way. Therefore we prefer to use the word fertility for our treatment, rather than infertility.

As the body, mind and spirit are all linked, there is a chance that the description infertility may in inself be counter-productive to conception and pregnancy.

So if you are finding it difficult to become pregnant, an important first step can simply be stop thinking of yourself as infertile.

At Healthwise we encourage you to take charge of your own fertility and offer a course of treatment which is specific to your condition. This includes acupuncture, and a course of herbal remedies in capsule form, plus a wealth of information about small changes you can make in your lifestyle.

If there is anything mechanically wrong with either partner we find it out straight away. Don’t forget, though that because the body, mind and spirit are all linked, there is an infinite capacity for change.

We are delighted that the fertility treatment at Healthwise Clinic has helped couples conceive where once they had no hope. Part of that is due to the fact that we empower you to take charge of your own fertility.

Give us a call if you would like an introductory consultation either in Burnham, Bucks or in Harley Street in London. Telephone 01628 668 339

May – the time for fertility

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Since ancient times couples would go off on their own into woodland around the May Day celebrations.  Babies would be born nine months later. Since families often lived in one room, the only chance for privacy was outside, and the warmer weather made this possible.

The modern May Day holiday coincides with the ancient festival of Beltane which was in effect a celebration of fertility, and has no Christian equivalent.  Hawthorn boughs (May) would be brought into the villages and lit in a huge bonfire, and there would be much celebrating.

Hawthorn is also known as May

Hawthorn is also known as May

The rural life depended on fertility for its existence.  The birth of animals and a good harvest meant the family would have enough food, and be able to barter.  Having another baby meant a mouth to feed but also the child would be expected to contribute with work.

Fertility was natural and inevitable. You could see it by looking at the blossom on the trees, the lambs in the fields and the green shoots.

In our modern – and vastly improved world – we have lost touch with the seasons.

We would be astonished if couples announced that they were waiting to conceive in May.   After all, babies can be born all year round… and we expect them to arrive when we choose.

Yet in natural health we take notice of the energy or Qi of the earth.  Our approach is that the human body is interdependent with the world around.  All things are connected.

When nature is springing into life it is a good time for us to do so, too. When nature is barren and cold it is time for us to rest and recuperate.

Infertility continues to grow in Britain.  Childless couples who want to conceive could start by enjoying the connection with the natural fertility of the month of May and see it all around. Fertility is happening naturally, as it has happened for hundreds of years.

A couple’s individual fertility treatment at Healthwise Clinic is based on acupuncture, herbal remedies and education.  We are delighted with our 64% success rate and with every pregnancy.  However we never forget that in diagnosing the condition we also diagnose in relation to the season and the energy of the earth.  That is part of the magic of new life.
